Details:
On overcast Sunday 18 December, the view to the west was obscured by cloud and light rain over Chikanga Township with no expected chance of seeing the Sun. However at 18.25 LT a couple of bright blobs of orange light appeared for one minute above the northern flank of Hospital Hill in almost the exact position where the Sun usually sets for the few days around the Summer Solstice. The accompanying animated gif, prepared from three pictures taken between 18.22 and 18.37 LT, includes the first glimpse of this amazing event. The two following mosaics are closer views of the apparition and then the real sun setting in the same place the following day. The last image includes two detailed views of the blobs of sunlight taken at maximum x 60 zoom magnification using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ 60 camera in sunset scenery mode. By some extraordinary co-incidence a small temporary gap must have developed in what appears to be a uniform blanket of rain cloud at almost the exact moment the sun was setting below the more distant horizon behind Hospital Hill. What one may ask are the odds for something like this happening? The answer must be millions to one against! By the way the small objects in the sky in three of the pictures are flying ants which emerge from the ground in big swarms during rainy evenings.
