Details:
Northern lights kicked up by the recent solar winds photographed over the McDonald valley in Montana's Glacier National Park. A dull green glow visible at twilight suddenly burst into energetic spires and waves before turning to pulsating sheets in the hours before dawn. No proton arcs observed.

A high definition video of almost the entire night can be viewed on my Facebook page and on EarthSky. (Hopefully, the upcoming revamp of SpaceWeather will allow the uploading of videos!)

In this still photo, the foreground is composed of many 5-sec exposures to show "car trails," and the background is a single image of the aurora at 10:16 p.m., just before it energized.

Timelapse created from still images captured with two Nikon D750 bodies and Rokinon 14mm and 24mm lenses. ISO 3200, 10 sec @ f2.8 (14mm), and 5 sec @ F1.4 (24mm).
