Tonight I filmed a very unusual sunset mirage, but what is the vertical pillar of light below the sun? To understand what it is you have to watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjZMPBO1tXs The first pillar appears at 0:20 into the video. Understand now what it is? If no, here's your answer: it is a whale's spout.
Of course the sunset was unusual not because of whales, but because of a very complex, multiple inversions. While the lowest sun was setting, producing some green flashes, the upper suns were not in a hurry to set and kept disappearing and reappearing.
