Details:
I noticed a diffuse 22 degree solar halo today as a storm system moved in. On closer examination I could see a smaller halo within the larger 22 degree halo. I have seen many 22 degree halos in the last two decades but this was the first time I could see a "halo inside the halo". After examining a few photos that I took, I also noticed another halo closer to the 22 degree halo. I checked Les Cowley's website and my guess based on what I found there is that these are 9 and 18 degree halos within the 22 degree halo and are caused by pyramidal ice crystals. There were also weak sundogs, a parhelic circle and a weak circumzenithal arc. It was interesting to see something odd and out of the ordinary!
