Details:
Low cloud with cold winds coming from the east have been producing overcast conditions in Mutare which persist until just before sunset when, as if by magic, the sky clears from the west allowing beautiful sunset displays to be projected from just above the horizon. On the 18 July, a spectacular beam of vivid red light was cast through a gap in the Christmas Pass Hills (second image) This was followed by radiating crepuscular rays which brightly illuminated a lingering band of low cloud above the point where the sun had previously gone down (third image). A few minutes later a stray ray of fading sunlight struck a lone candle flame shaped cloud making it appear to light up (lead image). Sunset illuminated clouds close to the horizon occur quite often and occasionally create an illusion that they and objects nearby have caught fire. This is a particularly unusual example.
