Details:
Venus first appeared in the Mutare evening twilight sky on 11 July (see previous posting id=127310). Yesterday (15 July) it was joined by smaller and fainter Mercury which was not visible to the naked eye. However both can be seen in photographs taken from 17.37 LT until Mercury disappeared below the horizon at 17.47. Venus continued to descend steeply before setting at 17.52. The accompanying animation covers a seven minute period from 17.45 until 17.52 and includes beautiful changes in color of the twilight sky. The following two still images were captured just shortly before Mercury and then Venus set. The final composite demonstrates that Mercury set at exactly the same point on the local horizon as the Sun did 41 minutes earlier. The photographs were taken using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 compact camera in sunset and night scenery modes at various zoom magnifications.
