Today Auroras observed from Bharati Indian Base station, Antarctica on date 28.06.2016 time 19: 10 UT. Even sunspot number zero from last couple of days, today we have observed very bright auroras, they cast shadows on the ground. "it was too cold outside but the bright auroras made us feeling of warmth". Details: Canon 600D, Manual mode, F3.5, 3200ISO,30".

Ive never seen a flash cast shadows onto an aurora -- not buying that photo with the two warm-looking fellows here. The rest may be entirely authentic, but theres some Photoshop work going on here.

It is pretty amazing that the aurora happened without a trigger from the sun, but I think it is perhaps more amazing that these two men can cast shadows on the empty space behind them... Perhaps the green screen would explain the presence of the aurora?

I dont know if the person who did photoshop on this messed the picture up intentionally or not but the shadows the guys are casting onto the blackness of space is pretty bad. If it wasnt intentional, you guys might want to take this picture down, before to many others see it. Either way, you guys are minor league.

I dont think they meant their shadows on the space behind them... that is just bad photoshopping... minuspoints for that!
This was probably meant as a postcard for home :-)
@steverenn: there are always triggers from the sun to spark auroras, but most of the time our planets magnetic field prevents that. A little opening in the field is enough to spark auroras, without obvious triggers from the sun.

I imagine that right now, you feel a bit like Alice. Hmm? Tumbling down that rabbit hole?
Lets not blow it now with armature photo-shopping

Re:photoshop... Actually as a photographer, this could have been done with only a camera.

Consider a longer shutter tinetime (in seconds) where the subject is back lit, in the dark creating a shadow, they dont stay perfectly still but this creates a blaxk silhouette. Then the flags goes off lighting the two guys up.

So this image is plausable.

@wboot49: Thanks. Was responding to the article that brought me here. On June 28th there were no sunspots, no solar flares, and no CMEs. Even without those forms of solar activity, the aurora australis appeared in force over the frozen continent. What caused the display? We dont know. Sometimes space weather just happens.

Actually we do know... there is always solar wind even without flares. Sometimes we get a weakened magnetic field and the flood gates open up.
