Beautiful tonight. I wasn't really expecting too much as I was admiring Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn on a moonless night, then I started noticing the lights to the north and was amazed at how bright they became. I'm not positive, but one of the shots I think maybe of a proton arc? I shot these east of Grafton, Iowa. Settings were ISO 800-1000 at 20 sec exposure.

Thanks for posting your photos. Im pretty sure this was the aurora I saw from the plane as it crossed over Iowa. I sat with my face pressed to the window & enjoyed looking at the lights of the little cities & noticed the unusual cloud. Ive seen auroras before and recognized what the cloud was all about. Must say - they look more beautiful from the ground than from the air. Glad you captured it and posted it. Thanks! Mary H.
