Here's a 180° panorama of the Northern Lights from March 9, 2016, showing twin parallel curtains of aurora, in the northwest, at left, and to the northeast, at right. The Lights are turning the ground green. This aurora was primarily green with little high altitude red component. Fringes did turn pink at times at its brightest. Arcturus is the bright star above the treetops of the boreal forest.
This night the Kp Index was no more than 2, perhaps hitting 3 at times, as we did see short-lived but quite impressive outbursts of brightness and motion. We had not expected to see anything this evening as the weather forecast for the Earth -- not space! -- called for cloud and snow. But the sky cleared surprisingly well, revealing the Lights and giving our latest group of aurora tourists a great show on the first of their five nights here at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre on Hudson Bay at latitude 58° North.
This is a stitch of 7 segments, each 3 second exposures at f/2 with the Sigma 20mm Art lens, and Nikon D750 at ISO 3200.
