Details:
The night of March 4/5 started with a Kp Index of 0 and absolutely no sign of aurora at all, despite the perfectly clear and dark skies. This was unusual for Churchill, Manitoba, under the auroral oval at a latitude of 58° N. But about 12:30 am, the aurora appeared and developed very quickly, and for the next 2 hours performed beautifully all over the sky. The Kp Index was still reading officially 0 but was probably 1 or 2 at this point. An unusual aspect of the display was the auroral curtains adjacent to the "summer" Milky Way in Cygnus, which from this latitude is circumpolar and visible low in the north in mid-winter. By 2:30 am the display was still covering the sky by then had faded into a typical post-storm breakup of patchy, mottled aurora. Our location was the Churchill Northern Studies Centre on the site of the old and now abandoned Churchill Rocket Range where, from 1957 until the mid 1980s, sounding rockets were launched into the auroras.
