Details:
On 27 February the intermittent drought that has affected Mutare and Eastern Zimbabwe for several months was interrupted by two intense very local afternoon thunderstorms which were accompanied by numerous spectacular peripheral cloud-to-ground lightning strikes. Twenty of these were captured on video using a tripod mounted Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ-10 compact camera and the best frames extracted to produce the accompanying animated gif which displays them for 1 second each. The lead photograph shows one of the strongest bolts striking near Hobhouse to the west of Mutare. Thunderstorms so late in the rainy season are rare and a sign that it has been a poor one. Their propensity to generate so many ground strikes results in death, serious injury and property damage and is the reason why Zimbabwe has one of the highest per-capita lightning fatality rates in the world.
