Details:
Scattered thunderstorms with some welcome rain continue to break the almost month long drought which has affected Eastern Zimbabwe. This evening an almost Full Moon, with halos and Jupiter were photographed when they briefly appeared through gaps between cumulus and low level fast moving clouds. Lots of moisture in the air including some very fine virga contributed to the production of the diffuse halo in the first surreal moonlit cloudscape. The reason for the spectacular light beam is not known but could be due to lens flare. The beautiful blue halo which immediately surrounds the moon in the second photograph was generated by thin veils of very fast moving low cloud passing in front of it during the four second time exposure. Jupiter was unaffected. The photographs were taken at various magnifications using a tripod mounted Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ-60 compact camera in night scenery mode.
