I was trying to photograph an upward lightning bolt when I began to notice a shadow above the storm cell. I've seen these shadows before but it was always during the day. These effects are fairly common with clouds illuminated by the sun but pictures with the moon are not so. The dark area is the shadow of the big cumulus cloud cast downwards by the moon onto a thin lower cloud layer. These lower layers are thin enough that they are not otherwise apparent.
