Details:
For the past four evenings Venus, Regulus, Jupiter and Mercury have been visible at the same time close to the horizon just before darkness. In the first picture, taken just after 6 PM this evening, Regulus, Jupiter and Mercury are at almost closest approach to the right of Christmas Pass in the hills west of Mutare. The second picture is a composite of four taken at almost the same time on 3 - 6 August and shows how rapidly Mercury has risen from being just visible above the horizon on 3rd to close to Jupiter today. The last image is an animated GIF which displays these pictures in sequence for 2 seconds each to show how all four objects have moved relative to each other. To view the GIF full-screen please click on the low resolution version which appears after opening the thumbnail. The photos are all 4 second x 7 zoom exposures taken with a tripod mounted Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 compact camera in Night Scenery mode.
