Details:
As predicted, a fine aurora display kicked up on time before midnight, local time, July 22/23. It peaked about 1:30 am MDT when I shot this scene, a panorama showing the sweeping arc of the auroral oval over the Alberta prairie. I shot this from Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park near the Alberta-Montana border, but here looking north over the flat prairie. This image is a 4-segment panorama taking in about 120° of sky from northwest to northeast. Observers from farther north were reporting the aurora overhead. While I saw an isolated reddish arc high in the sky early on in the display, from my latitude of 49° N the main display remained an arc across the north.
