Details:
A jet was flying in a direction directly away from the sun which was getting low in the sky. The jet trail was very bright and at first I thought its brightness was causing a reversed afer-image on my retina. But then I realized the grey streak in front of the jet was real. I confirmed that by photographing it. There it was. The trail was creating a shadow ahead of the plane. I am told that there needs to be a thin layer of cirrostratus to make this visible, though it seemed to be a very clear evening.

Nice observation. Thin cirrostratus will do this, but so will any sort of haze in the air.
