The brightly colored sunsets caused by the eruption of Calbuco volcano in April are becoming less frequent as the aerosols disperse and become more diffuse. This evening (12 July) just two days after posting the vivid composite of six 'Volcanic Sunset' images to the 'Realtime Space Weather Photo Gallery' the display to the west of Mutare was the least spectacular since the aerosols first arrived in early May. It was nevertheless very unusual in that the residual twilight arch developed an electric blue hue very similar to that observed from noctilucent clouds. I am wondering therefore if the aerosols are generating a similar phenomenon which is now visible because they are more diffuse? The images are all the more unusual because they were taken with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 camera using sunset auto mode which is not very sensitive to blue light.
