I animated my original 2011 photo of a gigantic jet to show what I saw that night. As you can see, the bolt rose from the top of the cloud then collapsed but then rose again releasing millions of blue, then red luminous beads. These luminous beads are the result of electrical charges exciting nitrogen molecules in the upper atmosphere. This is the same effect you get with sprites but with sprites the duration is so short that you don't notice it like you would with a gigantic jet. I can best describe this type of an event as a fireworks display created by Nature.
