Details:
Shown in these photos, taken last evening around 21:00UT with a Canon PowerShot SX60 HS camera, are Mercury, very low over the WNW horizon (still colored by trace amounts of lingering aerosols from the third eruption of the Calbuco Volcano), bright Venus (upper right), Aldebaran (left) and Beta Tauri. This eastern elongation of Mercury was particularly unfavorable for observers in the Southern Hemisphere because it happened when the planet was near its northermost apparent position (+24° declination) and also not far from perihelium, which resulted in a relatively small elongation (21°).
