Aerosols from Chile`s Calbuco Volcano, pushed by strong winds at the top of the troposphere, reached Rio today and produced an spectacular display of bright unusual colors across most of the western sky during evening twilight. My Canon Powershot SX60 HS camera at the "vivid colors mode" could capture an unusual red-magenta glow until an hour after local sunset. The blue component of sunlight, scattered by the thin layer of tiny aerosols, mixed with direct sunlight to produce several colors across the sky, depending on the size and altitude of particles, angles of incidence and intensity of sunlight, contrast, angle of view etc. Colors went from yellow-orange (closest to the Sun) to red-magenta with increasing distance from the Sun. The last color to become visible to the naked eye was red-magenta and most of the time yellow-orange prevailed. Several subtle hues could be also captured by the camera. Shots were taken from 20:43 to 21:21 UT.
