Details:
I have an INSPIRE VLF radio that I monitor natural radio emissions from the earth magnetic field, lightning and other naturally occurring radio phenomena. During this weeks ongoing magnetic storm I picked up a VLF radio phenomena called "Chorus" for the first time. I'd always thought VLF chorus was one of the "vlf animals" I'd never be able to hear living this far south. This solar induced magnetic storm must be really stong!!
I've also uploaded some mp3 audio clips of the chorus to http://dragonneo.net/sid/VLF/ so you can hear how it sounds. It'll sound like birds chirping down in with the bacon frying crackle of lightning strikes across the planet and the occasional "whistler". whistler's are the crack of radio that a lightning strike produces that get stretched out as the radio signal bounces back and forth from pole to pole in the earth's magnetic field. It's the radio equivalent of the way sound gets stretched through a guy wire if you tap it and listen to the "laser" sound it produces or the audio equivalent of what happens to light as it passes through a prism!
Enjoy!
