Unremarkable though these two faint aurora photos may appear at first sight, what is unusual about them is the location from which they were taken ... and the camera used.
I had just arrived back home in Southwold in Suffolk (UK), when I checked the spaceweather.com website and saw the huge splurge of red in the aurora doughnut ... and I cursed! … because both of my DLSRs and tripods were back in London and all I has with me was my small Canon compact.
But I grabbed it and headed out anyway. After a couple of hours spent dodging a shifting sea fog and local light pollution, I stumbled upon a reasonably dark location, and was delighted - not only to see the lights from my home town in SE England, but also to gain photographic evidence of my good fortune.
