Hi. I have a question for everyone actually. What is that very tall almost arching red/purple beam of light on the left hand side? To the naked eye, it was a very bright, almost transparent white with a very hint of reddish color arch of light. It was extremely tall. It went from the horizon to over my head in kind of an arching motion, but it didn't move left or right. I took this around 12:53 am Montana time. As far as I could tell, it was in the sky for at least 45 mins, but did not move location. I sure would love to know what this is! Its unlike any Aurora event I've ever witnessed. Also being in Montana, rarely do the Northern Lights go above our head, which is another reason why this tall beam stood out. Much much higher then the greens to the right.

I remember seeing an Aurora in October 1983 from England UK, which had the same type of feature it looked like a search beam and did not seen to move, whilst the other slow moving curtains, rays did over 45 mins. I too would be interested as i also have no ideas.

At a first glance, I thought it was a cloud. I dont think thats the case though. Im thinking its one of those phenomena that happen during winter due to ice crystals being present up in the air? Thats just a guess. I too have a question and I wish you could answer me. I live in Montana too and Ive been aurora-hunting in Montana for a while now with no luck! I witnessed aurora many times in northern norway, but I dont know how it works here. What are your techniques? Where do they usually show up? I know its to the north, but Im assuming they tend to show up to the north east or even north west due to the magnetic pole position relative to us? I could be wrong too haha. Time of the day?

Nice picture btw.. Have fun out there
