Details:
Despite the Kp reading of 1 or 2, we were again treated to a wonderful display last night in Churchill, Manitoba. The aurora kicked up about 9 pm and really broke loose at about 11:30 pm with all-sky curtains, often with reds and magentas showing up well in the camera views. These images are part of a 360-frame time-lapse I shot over about 100 minutes, until the battery died in the frigid temperatures. All frames are 15 second exposures at ISO 3200 with the Canon 6D and 15mm full-frame fish-eye at f2.8. The ultra wide field of the lens takes in the full sweep of the auroral oval to the north and high into the northern sky. Our experience this week again demonstrates the effectiveness of being under the auroral oval – Northern Lights are almost guaranteed on any clear night, indeed often with wonderful displays, even with low or quiet activity levels. The price to pay is the cold! It was -34° C last night with a wicked wind chill factor. In fact, the area was under an Extreme Cold warning, which for here on the shore of Hudson Bay, means COLD!
