Details:
Despite a Kp Index of only 1 or 2 last night, we were treated to a beautiful display of Northern Lights over the entire sky, with several moments of brightening as a wave of intensity swept in from the northeast and lit up the auroral curtains hanging over us in Churchill, Manitoba. This was the first night for a new group of auroral tourists who have arrived from around the world to take in the sky show this week. They were not disappointed, with the aurora outperforming my expectations and making everyone very happy. The group enjoyed taking selfie shots of them posing with the aurora in the background. The timing was excellent with the aurora peaking about 10 pm. However, another flare up at 1 am produced rapidly pulsing and moving curtains that provided a jaw-dropping display. As with previous images I've taken this past week, these are all shot with an 8mm fish-eye lens as a part of a sequence of hundreds of images for "full-dome" time-lapse movies for use in digital planetarium theatres.
