Chasing the complete darkness. On 16th Feb. I drove approx. one hour to north east from Joensuu with my friend, and again the goal was to find as dark place for night photography as possible. The forecast for Auroras was promising (45 % at high latitudes) but we were not too optimistic as the Kp index was only 1.0 at the moment of departure. As we arrived to our destination at the banks of Lake Koitere, we noticed a dim Aurora arc in the north. However it was very silent and we pointed our cameras towards the Milkyway. We were almost heading back to home after two hours and collecting our gear, but suddenly something started to happen.. and as turned from the switch, the "bright lights" were on! I've been photographing Auroras couple of years already, but I've never seen that much red in the night sky with naked eye. Very beautiful! The dark location actually forced us to use quite long exposures to capture also something else from the scenery than just Auroras in the photos, and at the same time we got a lot of red. Details: Nikon D610 + Samyang 14mm f/2.8 @ ISO 3200, 10-15 sec. f2.8-f4.
