Details:
This enigmatic phenomenon – St. Elmo´s Fire, showed it´s purple light 6 times between Dec. 10th. and 19th. at the west coast of Denmark. The clouds flew in from The Northern Sea - coursing electric charge and winter lightning. The phenomenon is related to light emissions from ionized air-molecules (plasma) in an electric field. St. Elmo´s Fire is seen at the tip of pointing objects, and it is difficult to photograph it. The phenomenon were known among previous times sailors, as purple burning lights at the top of the ships masts. The construction of my all-sky DSLR camera helps catching this phenomenon, 3 carbon fiber rods are pointing upwards around the camera doom, to prevent birds from landing on the doom. The rods seems to be an excellent device to produce St. Elmo´s Fire, and the camera is – you guessed it – right below. You can se a short time-lapse video from the first event here: http://youtu.be/fkcFQjy69cs The night before yesterday (20/12) there were a lot of lightning, and a fine show of St. Elmo´s Fire. A short video: http://youtu.be/7GlyNt_Ktdc The night before Dec. 16th. there were a very nice fireball, some very nice airglow with gravity waves, and a speck of St. Elmo´s Fire – all in one night. Se the video: http://youtu.be/VQlPZk2ntWA With this earthly show in the heavens I wish you all a very happy christmas.
