Details:
I set out for many trips this last late Summer-Autumn nights to Trillium Lake about 8 miles south of Mount Hood and Timberline Lodge with relatively darker skies than my home town of Portland Oregon at 50 miles to the west. The idea is using a Sony NEX5 digital camera with my 42 year old Mamiya 55mm lens from my college days 35mm camera. I mapped the entire northern sky, then photo-stitched with Microsoft ICE. The final post processing in Adobe Creative Cloud Photoshop brought out M31 Andromeda Galaxy well, M33 Triangulum Galaxy, and yes even the galaxy pair M81 & M82. But the real trick was using the wide open Mamiya 55mm f/1.4 antique lens with such great light transmission to get this in only 15 second exposures at ISO 800. A couple cropped version are here to show where M81 & M82 are with a progressive key-chart image.
