Details:
As part of the Jasper Dark Sky Festival myself and volunteers from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada set up telescope for public viewing in Centennial Park in the town of Jasper, Alberta. Skies cleared well enough for long enough at afford everyone excellent views. The views through passing cloud were just as interesting as the views in clear skies. The big sunspot group was also a big hit! Several hundred students from the schools across the street as well as the public (residents and tourists) enjoyed the views through a dozen telescopes. I shot these images through a 66mm apo refractor with a Canon 60Da camera, all through a mylar solar filter. The shots with Sun in clouds are long 1/15 to 1/25 second exposures, possible due to the dimmed Sun, and long enough to bring out the clouds and iridescent colours in the clouds. The other images are 1/8000th sec exposures in clear sky, showing the large sunspot group disappearing behind the lunar limb. A successful eclipse for all!
