I am still in awe of what the modestly equipped backyard astronomer can achieve today. Here is the trail of (mag 16) NEO 2014 SC324 as imaged from my suburban back yard, some 7kms from the centre of Brisbane.
It was quite magical to see the faint trail of this 65m sized object appear in the frame of my CCD camera, closely matching the location and time as generated by my planetarium program, The Sky X Pro.
Unfortunately I was shooting into the horrid light pollution of the city so this fast moving object only deposited a few grains of light on each frame as it whizzed by. The two lower trails appeared on the 3rd and last frames that recorded the faint trail of 2014 SC324; maybe meteor or satellite trails?
When I ran The Sky X Pro forward to midnight, Fri Oct 24th (from Brisbane), 2014 SC324 (mag 13.7) passes through the Hyades and “misses” Aldebaran, the eye of the bull, by approx. 20 arcmins, less than the apparent width of the full Moon.
Cheers
Dennis
