Hello,

Perhaps I could clarify that yes this picture was taken last night. If you go to the Mt. Washington Observatory website, you will see that they, too, saw similar auroral activity at 8:45 local time.

As to the question of startrails:
If you shoot with a wide enough lens, i.e., a 10.5mm lens, a 30 second shot can be taken without any evidence of startrails.

Other details: 30-second shot, aperture 2.8 (wide open), ISO 1600 … a secure tripod, and a dark location (before moonrise).

Yes, the Mount Washington Observatory reported strong aurora on Friday evening. Look-up the 500 rule for photographing the Milky Way. Focal length effects star movement. * Nice job, Instructor.
