Details:
I was surprised by a little substorm tonight. You have to be pretty diligent this summer to see auroras. We've had a lot of forest fire smoke from Canada and the western U.S., but the smoke cleared up a bit today, and ACE and GOES data were looking encouraging, so I looked to the northern sky. All I saw at first was a very dim, diffuse aurora, but then to my surprise, a substorm occurred. The show was pretty quick, though, as Bz was not very far south, only around -5 nT. This was the best shot.

I was gazing at the Milky Way and its magnificience when suddenly I saw it too. It was unexpected, but I was quite please to see it! ;-)
