After a uncomfortably hot spell here in southern England (and the rest of Europe) yesterday evening it started to cool down with a nice refreshing breeze so I decided to go for a late evening walk, as I was returning I noticed a diffuse silvery blue glow in the north west, could it be the first NLC of the year (for me) I wondered. My eyes are not as good as they were and I couldn't see any definite structure at that time so called my friend to have a look and he was fairly sure it was indeed NLC. Luckily for me I was less than a minute from home so as soon as I got in I grabbed my camera and tripod and a wide angle lens and then walked to a nearby park, by that time more obvious features were visible, it was unmistakably NLC.
Unfortunately the park is surrounded by blocks of flats so much of the display was obscured so I decided to go to another park, only a few minutes further away but I knew it has a much better view to the north, I should have gone there first!.
I had to go back home as I wanted another less wide angle lens and also to get my bike so I could get to the other park faster.
By the time I got there and got my camera set up the display, despite being lower on the horizon that when I first saw it, it had developed into quite a bright display with an interesting pinkish tint on the upper edge.
I returned at 03:20 hoping to catch a pre dawn display, there was some visible but it was faint I am not sure if I might have got there to late and just got the end of it before being washed out by sunlight, I thought it was be the best sort of time being about 1 and a half hours before sunrise. Either was I did not stay long as tropospheric clouds quickly rolled in.
