Details:
I wanted to experience the grandeur of a total lunar eclipse in the most natural and darkest environment possible. This time, I traveled to the Lenghu Astronomical Observatory in Qinghai, China which sits at an altitude of 4,200 meters.
When the eclipse entered the total phase (totality), I was stunned by the sight before me. The Milky Way became extremely bright during totality. In this panoramic image stitched together from multiple photos, the zodiacal light and gegenschein are surprisingly visible. Near the horizon, airglow can also be seen—it was truly unparalleled.
Lenghu observatory was said to be an astronomical observation site comparable to the top ones in the world by a Nature article published on Aug. 18, 2021.
