Details:
The stunning tail and anti-tail of comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, passing near the globular cluster M5 on the evening of October 15th. Despite the presence of an almost full Moon, the comet was easily visible to the naked eye, displaying a faint but elongated tail. Using a small telescope and a digital camera, the view was truly spectacular. This image (on the left) is a mosaic composed of three panels, captured with a 360 mm lens and an ASI 2600MC camera. Despite my best efforts, I wasn’t even able to capture the full extent of the anti-tail! Each panel of the mosaic is the result of averaging ten 60-second exposures, aligned to both the comet and the stars. Creating the mosaic was somewhat challenging, as the comet was moving rapidly across the sky. The image on the right is a close-up of the inner region, with the stars removed to better highlight the details of the coma and the inner tail.
