Details:
This photo of Comet 2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) was taken from Triangle Flat in the Central West of New South Wales at 4:30 this morning (03 October 2024). It is a single 8-second exposure at f2.8 and ISO 3200 with the camera on a static tripod (no stacking, no tracking). The camera was an unmodified Nikon D800 with a trusty Micro-Nikkor 55 mm lens. Minimal manipulation was applied in Camera Raw – just a touch of Contrast and Clarity applied. The comet was barely visible to the naked eye in the pre-dawn light combined with the sky glow from the lights of Sydney 100+ km away. To the lower left of the comet are the lights of a plane approaching Sydney airport. The other 12+ streaks are successful attempts at polluting the night sky.
