My heart is still racing after tonight's sky show. This is not what I expected from a G4 storm. When I looked out of my window at 10 pm local time, for a moment I thought a fire had broken out behind the building in front of me because the sky behind it was deep red (it happened once several years ago and the glow of flames looked very similar), but then I saw that the storm is already happening and I realized immediately that this was no fire. I packed my camera and went to my usual sky watching spot. I couldn't believe my eyes. The entire north and north-western sky was red (clearly different from the usual orange glow of street lights). Then the sky near the horizon began brightening, as if the sun was about to rise again. The glow was slightly green and I could clearly see narrow strands of low clouds in front of it. I realized I was witnessing the first 'proper' aurora display in my life, and from one of the worst light-polluted areas of the country no less. When the famous Halloween Storms happened, I was barely 13 years old and knew very little about space weather. Since then, I always dreamed of seeing such display myself. Tonight my dreams came true.
