Details:
The history of sunspot drawings may date back at least 900 years and has involved many famous astronomers like Galileo, Trouvelot and Carrington. Although cameras now do a spectacular and more accurate job than the human eye, this incredible week of sunspots, flares and prominences was worth documenting in the tradition of past astronomers. Here is the large region 3664 as seen and drawn from our coelostat at Griffith Observatory, and from a solar telescope as it changed and evolved. As well as today’s large prominences.
