Details:
An incredible show last night on the Canterbury coastline overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Given most forecasts predicted cloudy skies for Canterbury, we got lucky with just a thin veil of high cloud (producing a stunning sunset) and generally clear southern skies. As NZ skies darkened at nightfall, a cannibal CME arrived (a fast moving storm cloud overtook some slower, weaker plasma material) delivering a cloud of charged particles ready to rain down Earth's magnetic field lines. The resulting interaction delivered a light show that lasted for hours and that was easily visible to the naked eye (as usual the naked eye view was rather monochromatic and a little fuzzier than what the camera sees.) Nonetheless, it was a stunning night on the beach with faint aurora to be seen during twilight, some beautiful rays and a very prominent arc around midnight followed by an incredible display of rays in the early hours of the morning. The sound of waves crashing onto the beach and washing across the stony pebbles created the perfect soundtrack for the Southern Lights.
