Details:
With the Kp index forecast to reach 7 this morning, I suspected we might get a little red auroral glow low in the north, even though I knew it would be overwhelmed by the light of the 82%-illuminated moon. Nevertheless, I stumbled out to the backyard at 4:30 a.m. to try a shot or two. I was right on both counts. The glow showed up on the photos, but the moonlight made it impossible to see with the eye. I've added arrows to show where the auroral glow is (in case you’re wondering why we have arrows among the stars and you don't!) 😜 For us to actually see the aurora from the U.S. Southwestern deserts happens on rare occasions--and only if moonlight (or light pollution) doesn't interfere. In the Arctic or Subarctic, however, the aurora can seen even under the light of a full moon or city! Details: Nikon D750, ISO200, f/2.8, 13s exposure at 4:59 a.m. PST.
