I had submitted this Halloween collage 20 years ago as well. Orange aurora certainly is not common but it is not rare either. Over my 40+ years of aurora chasing, I have witnessed many orange auroras. I believe the explanation in today's Spaceweather column covers the exact reasoning behind orange aurora. Although the Halloween auroras had several periods of orange displays, the full range of colors were intense across Alaska, ranging from deep reds to pinks and they began the night of the 30th continuing right through the night of the 31st into dawn of November 1st. Great auroral display! The second collage has wonderful auroral displays over three solar cycles that show varying intensities of orange aurora. There will be more coming our way through Cycle 25...patience!
