I verified that the GOES X-RAY FLUX graph from the SPACE WEATHER PREDICTION CENTER was not showing a live reaction to the stunning M1 flare that occurred at 1338 UT on May 30. The first visible reaction appeared 2 minutes later when the flare had already subsided. When the graph shows M1 activity, the visible flare intensity (recorded with my camera) was only half of what it was at 1338! I have included screenshots demonstrating this lag, extracted from a video screen recording, for more details. CONCLUSION: Analyzing the GOES X-RAY FLUX graph to initiate recordings when activity is peaking is not the best way to capture maximum activity when things are happening rapidly! The better approach is to autoguide on a predicted active sunspot and record throughout the day. An alternative is to monitor the computer screen all day and be ready to hit the record button! Fortunately, the morning patchy clouds had cleared, and I happened to be observing the sunspot, making different crops/FPS measurements. I simply had to start recording... Using an acceptable setup consisting of a Cosmos 160 mm refractor, Altair ERD, Quark chromosphere, and Saturn-M SQR camera, Firecapture recorded a 60 GB SER file! I converted the file to MP4 (2 GB) and uploaded it to my YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/kc56pJRjZO8 ... Don't miss this rare and spectacular solar event in high resolution!
