Two Hemispheres, One Moon This image is a collage image of a moonrise, from the northern and southern hemispheres, both taken on 7th March 2023, at 600mm full frame camera focal length. The image from the northern hemisphere is from Dhanbad (India), and the image from the southern hemisphere is from Canberra (Australia). We have been working on this project for the last 6 months and were able to finally able to make it after overcoming a lot of challenges. Having seen the same moon, the moon's rise path in the two hemispheres follows different directions due to the way the Earth is titled on its axis. Below is a detailed explanation from ChatGPT: "The Moon appears to rise in different directions in the northern and southern hemispheres because of the way the Earth is tilted on its axis. In the northern hemisphere, the Earth is tilted towards the North Pole, which means that the Sun appears to move across the southern sky during the day. As the Earth rotates towards the east, the Moon also appears to move towards the east, but slightly towards the south, relative to the horizon. This gives the impression that the Moon rises in the east-southeast and sets in the west-southwest. In the southern hemisphere, the Earth is tilted towards the South Pole, which means that the Sun appears to move across the northern sky during the day. As the Earth rotates towards the east, the Moon also appears to move towards the east, but slightly towards the north, relative to the horizon. This gives the impression that the Moon rises in the east-northeast and sets in the west-northwest." ------------------------------------------ Some equipment info is below: Date of image taken: 7th March 2023 Northern Hemisphere moonrise image info: - Camera Body: Nikon D5600 (APS-C sensor) - Lens: Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary lens at 400mm (equivalent focal length in full frame camera = 600mm) - Exif: F/6, 1/3s, ISO400 x 6 (5 for moon, 1 for the focus stacked foreground). - Location: Dhanbad, India - Photographer: Soumyadeep Mukherjee Southern Hemisphere moonrise image info: - Camera Body: Canon R5 (full frame sensor) - Lens: Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary lens at 600mm (equivalent focal length in full frame camera = 600mm) - Exif: F/6.3, 1/10s, ISO100 x 5. - Location: Lake George, near Canberra, Australia - Photographer: Lucy Yunxi Hu
