After a 10 day break, our beloved NLCs rose over the north horizon again after midnight... The azimuthal extent of the display was enormous - it stretched from the Ursa Major (Great Bear, Big Dipper) to Perseus! In contrast, the field no longer increased significantly in height, even with increasing position of the sun. Venus stood right above the Dresden television tower in the midst of the noctilucent clouds. Above neighboring planet of the earth the + 1.682 mag bright star Elnath (Beta Tau). The very clear air after the cold front passage yesterday was optimal for the height of the NLCs. Just like a month ago, exactly to the day with the large NLC field (06/15/2022), the almost full moon illuminates the landscape. Such low displays in the morning are usually a sign that the season is slowly coming to an end – at least at my northern latitude of exactly 51°.
