Details:
surprise showing last night around 11pm of the Aurora Borealis over the Adirondack mountains of northern New York State. KP level only 5 according to spaceweather.com so I didn't expect much, but was shocked to see the columns of light when I did a quick test shot from my balcony and took this photo - yes, I have an awesome view from my bedroom! Usually that level of solar storm produces barely perceptible auroras at these latitudes, so this was indeed unexpected! Of course, the pinks, purples, and greens of the aurora are faint and are exposed through longer camera exposure as our eyes are not as sensitive to this faint color. A little tweaking of color and contrast in post processing, but the main columns of color like this comes straight onto camera.
