Details:
Threatened by clouds, and daunted by trying to align the rising eclipsed moon with Lick Observatory, 2.5mi away, it came together better than I dared hope. My target was to have it rise just to the right of the 120-inch (3m) Shane Telescope dome, which is 95 feet in diameter. Moving just 100ft to the left would have placed on the other side of the dome(!), which wouldn't have been so bad either :-) Rising targets give no time for running-with-equipment. The site was the side of a narrow road, where an opening in the trees provided a clear view. Earlier, my friends and I toured the observatory, scouted the sites, and dined at the magnificent Mount Hamilton Grandview Restaurant. We had a grand view of the sunset as we finished dinner, then scrambled into the car, drove to the site with no time to spare, jumped out of the car and began photographing. Other than a focus test, my first shot had the moon's upper limb just peeking over the ridge and partly behind the dome! I shot over 200 more, as it passed over the observatory complex. Last shot here shows a star that just reappeared near the top. Details: Sony A7R II with Sony 135mm GM f/1.8 stopped down to f/2.8, ISO 2500, Exposure 0.8sec. Strong crop on the first, modest crop on rest. Very modest processing.
