Details:
The clouds west of Dover, MO, were clearing to the southeast at sunset, and my friend Mike Larkin and I set up a couple miles south of there. We spotted the comet at about 18:00 local time, and noted it was considerably dimmer than 24 hours ago, when I could easily see it from KCMO with a 7 X 50 binocular. Still, it was brighter than the evening of the 20th (just before it had an outburst). This image was made at 6:23 pm, CST, with a 135 mm NIKKOR lens @ f/5.6 on a Canon Rebel XTi, using a guided, 2-minute exposure at ISO 400. Shortly thereafter, it sank into the air pollution below it. It looked great in 4.25 and 6-inch reflectors. Hopefully, another outburst will be coming between last night and January 3rd, when Leonard will be 5.2 million miles closer to the sun!
