Success is extremely rare when wanting to catch high resolution videos of a powerful solar flare ! It is more difficult that catching prominences who last generally for hours or days ...
Mine last really nice capture was in 2014 !
Why is that so ? You have to meet a lot of important conditions and be lucky ...
1- the flare is during the day at your location
2- the flare happens between about 9 AM and 2 PM local time otherwise, as the Sun is rather low, seeing is getting worse and worse especially in the afternoon
3- you need no clouds and pristine skies, reasonable heat around
4- You need to be there (no shoping time, no vacations or holidays, no ... you name it !) ready to capture (as the Sun don't tell it is going to erupt who is able to spend hours or even days waiting for flares !) BTW I had designed with G. Grillot an application to follow solar activity and record when high but with the new GOES it does not work anymore.
5- You need to have all the system ready and this mean a fast PC with lots of RAM, lots of hard disk space (100 to 250 GB ! best on SSD), a Polar aligned H alpha telescope, electric focusing and a fast and large sensor monochrome camera - I use ASI 174MM - ... All this in perfect aiming and perfect focus, flat frame in memory, etc, etc ...
Wow !
After the video are captured it is just a question of time ... nothing critical.
I use FireCapture, AS!3, RegiStax5/6, Astrosurface, VirtualDub, PSP, Irfanview ... and hours or days later the pictures and movies are done !
I guess I will share the resulting video on my YouTube channel SWeillerYT.
Joined is a picture when the flare (inside the 33 x 1 minute videos) was cutely duck shaped for a couple of minutes:)
