Details:
My last post shows the Mercury-Mars conjunction (when Mercury was below Mars) setting at 6.30 pm on 18th August, 11 1/2 hours before closest approach. This post shows the Mercury-Mars conjunction (when Mercury was above Mars) setting at 6.30 pm on the 18th, 12 1/2 hours after closest approach. The pair were not visible from Mutare at closest approach which took place at 06.00 LT on 19th when they were only 0.1 degrees apart and over the other side of the Earth. The x100 speed time-lapse animation was compiled from 133 x 4 second exposures taken between 6.07 and 6.31 pm. The last two images show close and distant comparisons of what the conjunction looked like from Mutare at the same times on the 18th and 19th. Mercury and Mars will not be as close again until August 23, 2032! Camera: Tripod-mounted Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS40 in night scenery mode.
