Details:
You mention the period of 2008/9 . Attached are images taken then. In early July 2018 the NLCs rose to c. 15 degrees elevation in the far northern sky. On 15 July 2009 they extended to virtually overhead as the images show. We are at c. Lat 52 degrees in Eastern England so are well south.
